Adriaan van't Riet, The Photographer

I've had a life-long passion for photography. About 20 years ago, while I was working for a major U.S. corporation running IBM mainframe computers, I got the news that they were closing the data center. When I called my wife and told her the bad news, she said, "This is great news. Now you can do what you have always wanted to do and follow your life-long dream of doing photography.

At that point, I decided I wanted to get into fashion photography. After eight years of that, with some success, including some magazine covers and editorial spreads, I decided that I didn't really care about fashion and didn't give a rat's ass about hemlines or the grunge look and decided I was tired of the lack of integrity of most of the people I had to deal with. So I looked for a change. The one good thing that came out of the experience was establishing a continuing friendship with one of the model scouts I met named Matthew, who later became, and continues to be, an art consultant in Las Vegas. In one of our conversations, he mentioned that I should check out the work of a photographer named Peter Lik.

After I saw his photos, I realized that this was my calling. I bought a Linhof Technorama 617s iii panoramic camera and spent a year fine tuning my technique and finding locations that really show off what the camera can do. I love to follow the clouds to get incredible lighting effects, especially at sunrise and sunset. I've found that the extreme panoramic format of the Linhof Technorama 617s iii camera captures a sense of space and depth that are greater than the field of view of the human eye.

For the techie types, the specifics are: Linhof Technorama 617s iii camera, Technorama 72mm Super-Angulon XL lens, Technorama 180mm Apo-Symmar lens, Hasselblad Film Scanner, Fuji Velvia film. With the Linhof Technorama 617s iii, I always use the Schneider center filter #3b on the 72mm Super-Angulon XL lens. The only other filter used on the camera lens is a Schneider B+W UV 010. No colored graduated filters or special effect filters are used.
